In our city Ashikaga, there was a famous legend of Kanafuri-Matsu (Pine Tree) sinde the Muromachi period.
According to the legend, there was once a beautiful pine tree in the garden of Ashikaga-Gakko Which was the oldest university in Japan. When students couldn't read a kanji character, he wrote it on a sheet of paper and tied it Onto the pine branch.
Next morning, somebody would write the syllabic of the kanji and tied it as the student did. That person was probably the professor of Ashikaga-Gakko. What a heart-warming story it was!
